Books That Make Me Cry.
Books That Make Me Cry. Please don't think that I'm some blubbering sap who cries at every movie, book, TV show, song, and commercial that comes along. Considering all the books I've read, I think it's pretty impressive that only these four have ever moved me to tears.
1. Of Mice and Men - John Steinbeck. I didn't just cry at this one, I cried: sobbing, shaking, screaming, turning the book to pulp with my tears, and then ripping it apart in anger and denial. I've never read it since, and it was a long time before I would read any other Steinbeck book.
2. Anne of Green Gables - L.M. Montgomery. I don't even want to hear it. Matthew was my favorite character, okay? And besides, I only cried one or two silent tears over him. The flood didn't break out like it did for number one.
3. Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix - J.K. Rowling. I won't spoil it for those of you who haven't read it, but I will say that a very popular character, one of my favorites, meets his end in this one. I was depressed for months -- yes, months -- after reading it.
4. J.M. Barrie and the Lost Boys - Andrew Birkin. I was reading this book in my college math class (sorry, Dr. McKenna) when I reached the part where J.M. Barrie's oldest adopted son, George Llewelyn-Davies, was killed in World War I. It was made even sadder because I knew that the worst blow -- the death of Barrie's younger son, Michael Llewelyn-Davies -- was still yet to come. I choked up right there in class.Labels: books
